Project engineer for construction
The term 'project engineer' (sometimes referred to as a construction engineer) normally relates to the application of engineering, management, and business skills to deliver specific projects.
According to Civil Engineering Procedure, 7th edition, published by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the title 'project engineer' is:
'...often used in promoter's (client's) and consultant's organisations for the role of an engineer responsible for leading and coordinating design and other work for a project. In some cases this title is used where the role is actually the greater one of project manager...'
Project engineers may be involved in activities including:
- Project design.
- The design of temporary structures.
- Site planning and layout.
- Cost estimating and cost control.
- Planning and scheduling.
- Project management.
- Materials procurement.
- Equipment selection.
- Quality management.
- Administration, and coordination.
Depending upon the size and complexity of a project, a project engineer may be responsible for just one job or for several. This means that travelling to many different sites can be part of the job description. Project engineers may work on-site in temporary offices and spend time out of doors, planning and checking work.
